Summer or winter, there's great stuff to see and do around Hungary's Lake Balaton, one of Europe's largest lakes, including swimming, hiking and sampling wine.
Lake Balaton has long been a destination for holidaymakers, even during the Soviet era when thousands of Germans were permitted to holiday under the rules of the less stringent Hungarian government. Now that we can all access Hungary’s Lake Balaton freely, the tourist infrastructure has grown further and there are a huge variety of ways to spend time there. Be aware, though, that as a common tourist destination, prices (especially for accommodation) are often higher than you’d expect in Eastern Europe.
The town of Tihany is a key tourist destination on Lake Balaton, and the reasons are clear when you see it. The peninsula extending into the northern side of Lake Balaton is actually a nature reserve with lots of great walks and hikes (including bird-watching possibilities), and the ferry terminal is a mile or so further down. The Abbey Church (Apatsag Templom) is the main sight, situated perfectly on top of the high part of town, with views from behind stretching across the lake. If you pay to enter the Abbey Church, you can also check out the Abbey Museum. Finally, the village itself is an attraction, with quaint old buildings, local crafts to buy and Hungarian food to enjoy.
Cruise from Balatonfüred
Further west along Lake Balaton is the larger town of Balatonfüred. All the action is centered on the pier and promenade along the front of the lake, with music and food and drinks in abundance on summer evenings. Also during summer, you can take ferries from here to Tihany. If you want to stay on Lake Balaton but are on a budget, then Balatonfüred is a good place to find some reasonably priced accommodation.
The largest town on Lake Balaton, on its far western end, is Keszthely (pronounced kest-hay). If you travel there along the northern shore of the lake, look out for the many vineyards and try some Hungarian wine along the way. In Keszthely itself, the most famous sight is the Festetics Palace, an eighteenth century construction worth seeing, as is the Old Town. There are also several parks and popular beaches along the edge of the lake.
When you’re ready to leave, the natural thermal springs at Heviz not far north of Keszthely is a must-visit. You can soak or swim in the naturally warm water and do something for your health at the same time – the perfect way to end any trip.
