Winter Fun in BudapestTry the Segway Tours, Ice Skating, Thermal Baths, Theatre, and More
Grey skies, wet streets and zero temperatures won't stop you from having fun - Budapest is a winter wonderland, full of fun things do to, no matter what the weather.
Just because it's winter in Budapest doesn't mean that you can't master new skills, see the sights, or enjoy yourself. Wrap up in the winter woollies and hit the streets to enjoy some attractions during the colder months! Segway TourTake a Segway tour, a quirky way of getting around the downtown area and seeing the sights. These unique "people movers" with two wheels and a handle bar are ideally suited to tour the inner city. After five minutes of instruction, the tour starts off, taking in the opera house, Andrássy ut, Erzsébet Tér, Vörösmarty Tér, and the Danube promenade with its fabulous views. Return via St. Stephen's Basilica. The thrill is the unique and fun factor of riding down the streets, mastering the machine, and of being a tourist attraction and starring in countless other people's photos and videos! Ice SkatingIf you'd rather slide than ride, head out to the ice skating rink at City Park. It's the biggest outdoor skating rink in Europe, and in a most romantic setting with Vajdahunyad castle nearby. There's nothing nicer than gliding in a colourful throng of people, all having a great time to the pulsing music. Forget to pack the skates? Don't worry, they can be hired, along with instructors. CircusFor family fun, nothing beats the circus. The round shape of the Big Circus in Budapest is reminiscent of the big tops of days gone by. Established in 1891, it's "the only stone circus (building) in Central Europe", and since opening, it's attracted 25 million people. ZooRight next door to the circus is the Budapest zoo, and no matter what the weathe, it's warm in the Palm house. With its birds and scaly inhabitants, it's only one of the many fabulous buildings in the zoo. Admire the bright swirling colours of the tropical fish in the aquarium, and step back in time to view animals of the past in the dioramas of prehistoric beasts. Admire penguins, seals, wolves, and the elephants in their splendid art nouveau Elephant house. Puppet TheatreTake in a show at the Bábszinház, or the Puppet theatre. Although in Hungarian, the plots are easy to understand. No one can fail to be delighted by the proficiency of the puppeteers and the responses they arouse in the youthful audience. The children laugh uproariously at the jokes, call out advice to the protagonists, and discuss the plot. It's a great way to pass a couple of cool hours! LabyrinthWwanting something completely different? Visit the atmospheric labyrinth in the castle district. Carrying a flickering lantern, run the gauntlet of history through an imaginative underground maze. It includes a 20th century monument of coke cans, a fountain flowing with red wine, and various allusions to Hungarian history and folklore. Dripping walls, damp floors, dead end passageways, and the low lighting add to the effect. But it's not for people afraid of the dark or who suffer from claustrophobia. Thermal BathsAfter hours of tramping the streets and taking in the sights, what better way of relaxing than visiting one of Budapest's many thermal baths? While the snowflakes swirl outside, wallow in the warm waters, soaking away the sightseeing aches and pains. Further pampering is possible by indulging in a pedicure, manicure, massage, facial, or any and every of the "body beautiful" services that most spas offer.
